How memory works, and habits that may support it

Memory often gets described as a filing cabinet: information goes in, sits in a drawer, and comes back out when you need it. The reality is messier and more interesting. Remembering is an active process with several distinct steps, and each step can be helped or hindered by ordinary, everyday habits. Understanding the steps makes the habits easier to choose, though no habit guarantees a particular result for any individual.

The three steps: encoding, consolidation, retrieval

Encoding is the moment information first enters the system, when you hear a name, read a paragraph, or notice where you parked. Encoding depends heavily on attention. If your attention is split, the information may never be registered clearly in the first place, which is why “forgetting” a name seconds after an introduction is often really a failure to encode it at all.

Consolidation is what happens afterward, largely outside your awareness. Over hours and days, the brain stabilizes new memories and connects them to what you already know. Sleep appears to play an important role here: research suggests that several stages of sleep are involved in strengthening newly formed memories.

Retrieval is pulling the memory back out. Retrieval is not like replaying a recording, each act of remembering is a partial reconstruction, influenced by cues, context, and how often the memory has been used. Memories you retrieve regularly tend to become easier to access; memories you never revisit tend to fade.

Habits associated with supporting memory

Prioritize sleep

Because consolidation appears to depend on sleep, a consistent sleep routine is one of the most commonly cited memory-supporting habits. For most adults, roughly seven to nine hours is a reasonable target, and regular sleep and wake times may matter as much as the total. Short sleep tonight can affect not only how well you remember yesterday, but how well you encode tomorrow.

Pay full attention at encoding

What never gets encoded cannot be remembered. Simple moves, repeating a new name aloud, putting the phone away during a conversation, pausing to notice where you set your keys, give information a fair chance to register. Multitasking during learning is one of the most common and most avoidable reasons new information slips away.

Space it out and test yourself

Two of the best-studied learning strategies are spacing and retrieval practice. Spacing means spreading study or practice across multiple shorter sessions rather than one long one. Retrieval practice means actively recalling information, quizzing yourself, explaining an idea from memory, rather than only re-reading it. In education research, both strategies are consistently associated with better retention than cramming or passive review, although results vary by person and material.

Move your body

Regular physical activity supports overall health, including cardiovascular health, and researchers continue to study its relationship with memory and other aspects of cognition. Many public-health bodies recommend regular moderate activity for adults for general health reasons, a walk most days is a practical starting point.

Use cues and structures

Externalizing memory is not cheating. Calendars, lists, consistent places for important objects, and linking new information to things you already know are time-tested ways to reduce the load on memory and catch what slips through.

Manage stress and mental load

High stress and a crowded mind make both encoding and retrieval harder, most people have experienced blanking on something familiar under pressure, only to remember it later once the pressure lifts. Habits that lower background load, such as writing worries and to-dos down, building in genuine breaks, and keeping routines simple during busy periods, can leave more attention available for the things you actually want to remember.

Keep expectations realistic

Occasional forgetting is a normal part of how memory works at every age, it is the price of a system built for meaning rather than perfect recording. The habits above are associated with supporting memory in research and practice, but they are not guarantees, and they do not treat or prevent any condition.
